Case study

Hysab Kytab

A money app for people who have never used one — designed around cash, three languages and a calm first month.

Delivered by AISYS founder Muhammad Maavia before AISYS was founded in May 2026. Shown as an example of our founders' work, not AISYS client history.

The product

What it is

Hysab Kytab helps people in Pakistan see where their money goes. It handles daily expenses, budgets and saving goals in English, Roman Urdu or Urdu.

The audience was wider than most finance apps assume. According to the World Bank, only 21% of adults in Pakistan had an account in 2021, and much of everyday spending happened in cash. The product had to meet newcomers where they were and still reward people who wanted more control. AISYS founder Muhammad Maavia designed the interface in 2021, before AISYS existed, while a co-designer led the research.

The challenge

A finance app for people without finance habits.

Many users earned and spent in cash and had never opened a banking or budgeting app. Asking them to learn financial vocabulary on day one would have lost them. The design had to feel as simple as noting a fare, while leaving room for budgets, goals and reports.

The Scope

What the work covered

  • Interface design across 175 screens and 15 flows
  • Every empty, error and success state, not only the happy path
  • A component library of 264 reusable parts, plus icons and colour styles
  • Three interface languages from the first screen
  • Two dashboard modes for different confidence levels
The Process

From Brief to Handover

01

Understand

The team agreed the audience, the problem and the scope. Research, led by the co-designer, set the direction.

02

Shape

The structure was kept shallow: four everyday tabs, one add button, and a side menu for occasional tools.

03

Detail

Each flow was designed end to end, including what the screen shows when it is empty, wrong or finished.

04

Hand over

Screens were refined to version 5 and delivered with a component library, icons and colour styles for engineering.

Key design decisions

Three Choices That Shaped the App

Cash Counts

Cash has its own wallet beside the bank accounts from the first launch, so logging a small cash spend takes seconds.

Language Comes First

The first thing a user picks is the language: English, Roman Urdu or Urdu. Everything after it speaks the same way.

Start Simple

New users get a light dashboard. Anyone who wants budgets and insights can switch to the expert view at any time.

Outcome

In people's hands. Live on both stores.

The app is live on the App Store and Google Play and has passed 500,000 downloads on Google Play. The research behind it belongs to the co-designer and is not shown here.
